Confusion arose today (Tuesday) over the issue of opening the Mahane Yehuda market in Jerusalem, ahead of the start of the closure this coming Friday.

Mayor Moshe Leon announced earlier that the market will remain open, according to talks with senior officials in the Ministry of Health.

However, following his statement, Health Ministry officials rejected the claim that the market would operate in a normal format, and that the directive on this matter had been distorted.

"After talks with the senior echelon of the Ministry of Health, Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Leon announced: The Mahane Yehuda market will remain open as the writers and supermarkets remain open during the closure," the municipality said.

Leon said that "the market is a major source of food consumption in the city of Jerusalem and I welcome a change in market policy."

Leon first announced the move to the chairman of the Traders' Committee, Tali Friedman, who welcomed the move.

"The law of the Judean camp is the same as the law of the writers." Our demand to continue operating was justified and we would not accept a situation of a second closure, as this would lead to a total collapse for merchants who eagerly waited for the holidays to return some money. "

However, despite the announcements from the municipality and the tenants, a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Health said that "we do not know this, it is clear."

Sources in the health system addressed the issue and said that it seems to be a distortion of what was determined according to the guidelines.

"Right now the decision about markets is that the food stores that provide an essential service will operate, no matter if they are on the street, in the market or in the supermarket. There is no exception to the Judea camp. Apparently there are those who want to understand it as an 'open market'."

Another source in the health system noted that there was indeed an agreement regarding the opening of the Mahane Yehuda market, "but things are not closed yet."
