Barbados wants to become a republic and remove Queen Elizabeth from the symbolic role of head of state.
"It is time to leave behind our colonial past," said Prime Minister Mia Motley, who plans to complete the process by her 55th Independence Day, November 2021.
"This is the ultimate declaration of support for who we are and what we can achieve," Motley said in a speech. , Who said that the islanders in the Caribbean want a local head of state.
The statement is part of the "Throne Speech," which outlines government policies and plans for the new parliament session.
While read out by the Queen's Governor - General, it was written by the Prime Minister, who is not the first in the country to call for disengagement from the UK: a 1998 Royal Commission of Inquiry has already recommended that Barbados become a republic.

Buckingham Palace and the UK Foreign Office said the decision was up to Barbados citizens and that the countries would continue their close co-operation, given "history, culture, language and many other things in common".
England conquered Barbados in 1625 and many slaves from Africa were brought to the island who brought in a large fortune to the white elite.
Several former British colonies in the Caribbean have already disengaged from the crown in the past and become republics.
Guyana did this in 1970, less than four years after gaining independence.
It was followed in a similar way by Trinidad and Tobago, in 1976, and Dominica, in 1978 - all three remained in the Commonwealth, a looser organization of past colonies and present protectorates, alongside some countries with no historical ties to Britain.
