Ivorian policeman Théodore Dago Séri, sentenced to 17 years imprisonment for the murder of French journalist Jean Hélène in 2003, will be released in October after serving his sentence, the military court in Abidjan announced Thursday.

The military court, after having found Théodore Dago Séri guilty, has also removed him from the police force since 2004, which he will no longer be able to reinstate,

The murderer escaped from the Abidjan Detention and Correction Center (Maca) during the post-election crisis of 2011, before being apprehended and returned to Abidjan prison.

On the evening of October 21, 2003, Théodore Dago Séri had shot dead Jean Hélène, a correspondent for Radio France Internationale (RFI), aged 50, with a Kalashnikov bullet in the head, while he was waiting near the headquarters of the national police, in Abidjan, the release of eleven members of the party of Mr. Ouattara, the current Ivorian president, then in the opposition.
The Ivorian police sergeant was sentenced on January 22, 2004 in Abidjan to 17 years in prison for "
intentional homicide
".
