The European Parliament today expressed its solidarity with Greece and Cyprus in the face of the violations committed by the Turkish regime in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Russia Today reported that the European Parliament passed a resolution today, with a majority of 601 votes in favor of the resolution against 57 votes against, expressing its "full solidarity with Cyprus and Greece and its condemnation of Turkey's practices in their exclusive economic zone", expressing concern about the continuation of the dispute and the risk of it turning into a military conflict between two members in The European Union, namely Greece and Cyprus on the one hand, and Turkey on the other side.
The parliament stressed that the European Union’s position is clear and its firm determination to protect its interests, urging Turkey to “immediately stop any illegal exploration and drilling activities in the eastern Mediterranean, refrain from violating Greece’s airspace and the territorial waters of Greece and Cyprus, and stop relying on rhetoric that incites war.”
He warned that the foreign policies pursued by the Turkish regime and its practices in the Mediterranean bring negative consequences to regional stability, calling on the European Council to be ready to take punitive measures against specific or targeted sectors new to Turkey.
Parliament criticized the human rights situation, the erosion of democracy and the rule of law in Turkey under the regime of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, pointing out that relations between Ankara and the European Union have been tangibly damaged by these violations.
It is scheduled that the European Council will hold a special meeting on September 24-25 to discuss the dangerous escalation in the eastern Mediterranean and Ankara's role in it.
