The Swiss International Institute for Management Development released the Smart City Index on September 17, Hong Kong ranked 33rd.

The Institute visited more than 13,000 people in 109 cities around the world to learn about the impact of technology on five areas: health and safety, mobility, activities, opportunities, and governance.

From smart traffic monitoring cameras and car-sharing mobile apps to pollution monitoring devices and free Wi-Fi, cities around the world are racing to embrace technology, but researchers say the real test is whether people feel benefited.

Arturo Bris, director of the Institute’s Global Competitiveness Center, said: “The world’s “smart cities” not only adopt new technologies, but also ensure that technology will indeed improve people’s lives.”

This is the second time that the International Management Development Institute has published the Global Smart City Index.

The index shows that many countries are developing smart secondary cities outside the capital.

For example, the Spanish city of Bilbao (Bilbao) ranks higher than the capital, Madrid, and the second largest city in the UK, Birmingham, is also rising faster than the capital, London.

Experts say that the novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) epidemic has accelerated the development of greener and smarter cities.

Bliss predicts that smaller cities will become a trend, because living in small cities will be safer.
