Israeli society has not yet begun to lick its wounds from the severe damage caused by the previous closure imposed on it, and has claimed hundreds of lives and bodies.

An additional closure may lead to a decrease in those infected with the corona epidemic, but at the same time it may lead to a sharp increase in the number of victims of the domestic violence epidemic.

A severe and even more brutal epidemic than that of the corona virus.

The assistance system for victims of domestic violence is not prepared for another wave of victims, which are expected following the expected closure.

Not all the lessons from the previous quarantine have been learned.

I wonder if the Minister of Welfare, Itzik Shmuli, is confident that the victims will be able to receive an appropriate response to their plight.

Is everything being done to prevent the expected increase in casualties?

In my work, I experience on a daily basis the difficult distress that women and children who experience violence within the family encounter.

Some children and women who only hear the word "closure" show symptoms of severe anxiety and post-trauma.

For them, closure means returning to a closed place that is all suffering, and they are more terrified than expected of them.

I cannot stand aside, and I feel obliged to warn that the state is not prepared to deal with the epidemic of domestic violence, which will erupt even more with the next closure.

I call on the minister in front of me to fight for the lives and souls of those who may continue to be harmed by it.

It is difficult not to ignore the data published by the Ministry of Welfare, which indicate an alarming increase in the number of people applying to welfare services during the previous closure.

From personal information, many of the victims did not find the strength to seek help.

This is an epidemic that takes victims on a daily basis and in a severe way, and their number will only continue to rise if another closure is decided upon.

During the Corona: A sharp rise in the number of complaints of domestic violence

To the full article

The closure led to a sharp rise in appeals to the Ministry of Welfare

The data show that the closure led to a sharp increase in applicants to line 118 of the Ministry of Welfare: during the months of closure in April and May there was a 122% increase in the number of referrals, from 849 in April to 1,885 in May.

A report released by the Ministry of Welfare explicitly states that this is a trend that has been going on since March, when the closure began.

Data published and referring to the month in which the closure was lifted - June, show that there has been a decrease of 300 applications since May, although this is still a very high figure compared to June 2019.

Even more difficult data

emerges

from a report by Sahar, which compared April 2020 to January and February 2020, showing a 500% increase in inquiries from 18-20 year olds for domestic violence.

The data on loneliness is no less difficult, and the association's data show that in April there was an 80% increase in inquiries from children aged 10-13 who reported loneliness.

The police have a more important job than Mark enforcing the closure.

The welfare services have already warned in the previous closure that they do not have the power to help all who turn to them and the fear is that the situation will only get worse.

Iris Florentin, head of the ministry's director of social services, was quoted in the media on April 29 before the previous closure ended, because the working assumption is that there are many more who do not apply.

According to her, one of the barriers to reporting or seeking counseling on domestic violence is that in situations of confinement in homes, there is not the privacy required to make the application.

It's time to launch a media campaign on the ministry's assistance system, with an emphasis on line 118 for applicants.

It is important to raise awareness among the general public as well, thus harnessing it to assist victims, and to pay attention to exceptional events in the immediate environment that require intervention.

The set of social facts must be strengthened and ready for the treatment of casualties, and emergency plans must be ready in the coming days.

Law enforcement agencies, like welfare authorities, should also be alert to the plight of at-risk children and women.

I suppose most of the police lecturer will be subject to quarantine enforcement, but it is more important that the cops be available to give immediate treatment to complaints of domestic violence.

It is a tangible danger to life that hovers over the heads of those who find it difficult to defend themselves, and need the help of the state.

Treating them should be a priority for the Israeli government and the Ministry of Welfare.
