The covid-19 pandemic has generated many changes in airports, from the implementation of disinfection stations to the mandatory use of masks.

But San Francisco International Airport (known by the code SFO) has decided that, instead of adding, it will take something away: noise, specifically.

The new "quiet airport" plan aims to reduce noise throughout the venue by 40%.

The first step is to make the announcements about the boarding of specific flights or the delay only at the corresponding gates instead of throughout the terminal.

"We have invested heavily in making the airport experience at SFO more relaxing and enjoyable," said airport director Ivar C. Satero in a statement.

Satero added that the noise reduction program was worked on before the pandemic.

However, the timing coincides with the reopening of the San Francisco international terminal on September 1, which had been closed since April 1.

In general, airport representatives say that "more than 90 minutes of unnecessary advertisements have been removed per day."

Next on the list is reducing noise produced by automated airport devices, such as escalators and moving walkways.

In addition to reducing noise pollution, the airport has taken steps to reduce the most common forms of pollution.

Airport officials announced their intention to make SFO the world's first zero-waste airport by 2021 and banned the sale of single-use plastic water bottles throughout the building.

While this 'quiet please' policy is new to San Francisco Airport, the concept is not unfamiliar to frequent fliers.

Qatar's Hamad International Airport in Doha (HIA) maintains a policy of silence, except for the five Muslim calls to prayer per day.

That aims to give some of the 30 million passengers who pass through the airport in a typical year a sense of peace, whether they are leaving, relocating or returning home.

And in Finland, Helsinki International Airport (HEL) has been designated as a quiet airport.

There, announcements are also made in the gate area only, meaning that travelers planning to spend time in a lounge, bar or duty-free shop are warned to be vigilant about the time.

Another useful tool for reducing noise is technology, specifically smartphones.

More airlines and airports provide travel updates via apps or text messages, reducing the need to make individual announcements or locate passengers.

CNN's Brekke Fletcher and Barry Neild contributed to this report.
