Men are paid more than women in all regions of the world, according to the UN.

This September 18, the International Day for Equal Pay is celebrated for the first time, a date that makes it possible to see that, despite the improvements, there is still a lot of work to eliminate the gender pay gap.

According to the United Nations, progress has been slow in closing the gap between what women and men earn.

These efforts have broad support.

The problem is putting them into practice.

Here are five figures that reveal the disparity between what men and women earn today.

16% pay gap

UN Women reports that the gender pay gap in the world is 16%.

This means, in other words, that women earn 84% of what men earn on average: that for every dollar men earn, women earn only 84 cents.

Do you want to know what the gap is in your country?

The International Labor Organization allows you to know the figures in the different countries according to a report made in 2018 here.

Latinas in the US earn an average of 54 cents for every dollar a man earns

Women who work full-time in the United States generally earn 82 cents for every dollar a man earns, according to a 2019 report from the National Women's Law Center. That means $ 10,194 less a year in median earnings.

The difference deepens between black and Latina women.

The former earn 62 cents for every dollar a man earns, while among Latinas that figure drops to 54 cents, according to the study.

According to the UN, worldwide women receive 77 cents for every dollar a man has, another figure makes the gap visible on the International Day for Equal Pay.

Achieving economic parity will take 257 years

According to the latest Annual Report on the Global Gender Gap from the World Economic Forum, in 2019 “only a handful of countries” were getting anywhere near equality when it came to economic participation and opportunities for women.

To fully achieve this, at the current rate the world will need 257 more years.

Women do triple the amount of unpaid housework

How are cleaning, cooking and care tasks divided in your house?

Data from UN Women show that, globally, women do three times as much unpaid care and domestic work as men.

In terms of time, women dedicate an average of 4.1 hours a day to these tasks, compared to 1.7 hours for men.

The agency has an online tool that allows you to calculate how many years of your life will be spent on this type of activity.

Pakistan and the Philippines, at the extremes

The average wage gap varies greatly depending on the country.

The World Wage Report 2018/2019 of the International Labor Organization states that “it ranges from 34% in Pakistan to –10.3% in the Philippines”.

That "-10.3%" means that, in fact, in the Philippines women earn 10.3% more than men).
