Two young drivers collided head-on in the roundabout in Schongau on Thursday.
This was preceded by a wild overtaking maneuver.
Schongau
- As reported by the Schongau police, a 19-year-old Peitinger drove his car on Marktoberdorfer Straße towards the city center at around 10.30 p.m.
There were two more cars ahead of him.
As the three approached the roundabout at the Pfaffenwinkel Realschule, the Peitinger accelerated sharply and overtook the vehicle in front of him.
A 20-year-old from the Landsberg district, who drove the first vehicle in the column, then also accelerated and drove into the roundabout.
Peitinger is racing the wrong way around in the roundabout
In order to be able to overtake him, the police assumed, the Peitinger simply drove wrongly at high speed - namely to the left - into the roundabout.
Both cars then crashed head-on.
The vehicles were totally damaged.
The police estimate the damage to property at a total of around 25,000 euros.
Both drivers stated on site that they were not injured.
Marktoberdorfer Straße had to be closed for about an hour due to the accident.
Frontal crash: police are investigating
The Peitinger is now being investigated for endangering road traffic.
When the local newspaper asked the police, it is not yet possible to say whether the motorists fought an illegal race and that is why the accident occurred - but it is certainly the subject of the investigation.
The police have not confirmed that there are frequent races in the Marktoberdorfer Strasse area.
However, there are always complaints about drivers who are traveling too fast.
