More than 850,000 people residing in 37 basic health areas of the Community of Madrid will see their mobility limited from next Monday, September 21, as a result of the rise of covid-19 infections in the region.

Among other measures released this Friday by the executive of the region, those affected will be restricted in their ability to enter and leave these areas, except for medical, labor, educational or force majeure reasons.

Capacity in different areas will also be affected, since shops and hospitality centers in these areas must limit their capacity to 50% of their capacity and close at 10 pm, except for home deliveries.

Regarding places of worship, the capacity will be reduced to one third, while wakes will only allow the attendance of a maximum of 15 people in open air spaces and 10 in closed spaces.

Finally, and with extensive application to the entire Community of Madrid, social gatherings in public and private spaces will be limited to a maximum of 6 people.

This new package of measures will affect 13% of the total population of the autonomy, partially distributed in 6 districts of Madrid capital and 11 neighboring municipalities.

The latter account for almost 24% of the infections in the region.

These are areas that quadruple the cumulative incidence of infections nationwide, located at 259 infected per 100,000 inhabitants in the last fourteen days.

For this reason, the regional executive led by Isabel Díaz Ayuso, will add to its containment strategy the performance of a million rapid tests to all residents of these areas to detect new positives and isolate them.

“We need citizens to collaborate, the virus is everyone's business,” Diaz Ayuso appealed when presenting the measures to the media.

Penalties for non-compliance with mobility restrictions

As highlighted by the regional government, these measures will have an initial duration of 14 days, and non-compliance could lead to penalties of between US $ 710 and US $ 710,000.

"We are aware that with these decisions we are truncating initiatives and businesses, but we are aware that if we don't, the situation will be worse in a few days," explained Ignacio Aguado, vice president of the region.

To ensure proper compliance with these new restrictions, the Madrid Health Minister, Enrique Ruiz Escudero, said that they hope to have the collaboration of the town halls and municipal security forces.

"We must ensure that the quarantines are complied with, which is one of the great problems that we are detecting," said Ruiz Escudero.

According to data offered by the community this Wednesday, at least 90 people from the Community of Madrid have received a request from the local police for not staying home after being infected, thus putting other citizens at risk.
