Russia reiterated the illegality of the unilateral coercive economic measures imposed on Syria, noting that it impedes a political solution to the crisis there.
Russia Today quoted Russia's permanent representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, as saying in a speech delivered today at a session of the UN Security Council that unlawful unilateral sanctions are being used as a tool of collective punishment and aim to ignite social discontent by itself that hinders the efforts of those who want peace in Syria.
Yesterday, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, confirmed that the American coercive measures impede the political settlement of the crisis in Syria, as well as the progress of the political process, including the work of the committee for discussing the constitution in Geneva, and humanitarian reasons that lead to additional suffering for the Syrian people.
In addition, Nebenzia criticized what was revealed by the public recognition of US President Donald Trump that he had thought about targeting President Bashar Al-Assad.
Nebenzia indicated that we recently heard about plans to target the head of a sovereign state, wondering ... what is this if it is not a policy of regime change ... calling on “parties that show lack of respect for international law to abandon such practices,” in a clear reference to the American administration.
Yesterday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates confirmed that the statements of the head of the American administration about targeting President Bashar Al-Assad confirm that this administration represents a rogue and outlaw country and pursues the same methods of terrorist organizations with killing and liquidation without regard to any controls or rules in order to achieve their interests.
