The United States will ban the use of Tiktok and WeChat apps for reasons of national security, the country's Economy Minister Wilbur Ross said today (Friday).

This, for fear of users' information security and for the purpose of "protecting the national security of the United States," according to the statement Ross made.

This announcement follows a presidential decree issued in August, calling for defining the download of apps as a banned deal.

"Under the President's guidance, we have taken significant action to combat China's malicious collection of personal data of American citizens, while promoting our national values and democratic norms, and aggressively enforcing American laws and regulations," Ross said in a pre-prepared statement.

The WeChat app will be blocked for download in the country starting Sunday, while Tiktok is expected to be blocked by November 12 at the latest.

Despite this, Ross said this morning in an interview with the Fox network that the use of the Chinese app may be possible subject to the installation of certain means of protection.

The U.S. administration said the order banning the use of the apps, announced by Trump in August, "will combat China's malicious data collection on U.S. citizens."

The administration has previously announced that the use and download of the app for communication purposes will not be considered a prohibited transaction, although the transmission of messages in the app "may be directly or indirectly harmed" due to the ban.

Also, people who use it for messaging will not be subject to penalties.

The blocking order of the apps follows the entry into force of the presidential order signed by the US president in early August, which bans deals with BateDance, the Chinese company that owns the "Tiktok" app, and a similar order issued against WeChat.
