U.S. government officials have intercepted an envelope for the White House containing ricin-type poison, a senior U.S. law enforcement official said Saturday night.

According to the senior official, the letter was intercepted at a government facility that scans mail addressed to the White House and US President Donald Trump.

Preliminary investigation of the envelope that was intercepted revealed that it contains a substance of the ricin type, a poison that is found naturally in the beans of the castor plant.

The senior official was not allowed to discuss the ongoing investigation in public and said the things anonymously.

Federal investigators are trying to determine where the envelope was sent from and who sent it.

The investigation is being led by FBI investigators, the United States Secret Service and the United States Department of Postal Services.
