The waste recovery rate in Hong Kong has been low in recent years.
The Environmental Protection Department announced that it will launch a pilot program for smart recycling systems, launch smart recycling facilities in communities in phases, and test the local application of the system.
In the first phase, an intelligent recycling system will be installed on the "Community Intelligent Recycling Vehicle", and the four most common recyclables, including waste paper, plastic, metal and glass, will be tested.
The authorities pointed out that compared with traditional recycling bins, the intelligent recycling system can automatically measure and record the weight of the recycled objects, and provide overflow notifications to improve the use and management efficiency of the recycling bins.
Citizens put the recyclables into the smart recycling box to earn points and redeem small gifts.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, it is currently promoting the smart recycling system in various districts through the "Community Smart Recycling Vehicle". The opening and closing of the door of the system is electrically operated, and the number of recycling bins and types of recycling can be flexibly combined.
In the first phase of the pilot project, the system will also be installed on the recycling vehicle. The recycling vehicle is currently patrolling various districts for the public to visit and experience the new recycling system; the government’s waste reduction and recycling outreach team will introduce the pilot program and smart recycling process to the public on the spot .
The authorities plan to set up smart recycling systems in the second phase of the pilot project in the "Green in the Eastern District", "Green in Tuen Mun" and two community recycling centers. At that time, citizens can also use the electronic points earned through the system to redeem gifts.
After the recycling truck completes the promotion activities in various districts, it will also be officially put into service and become a mobile smart recycling station, collecting the recyclables brought by the citizens at fixed points.
