12 Hong Kong residents were intercepted by the Chinese Coast Guard when they were suspected of absconding to Taiwan. They are currently being detained in the Yantian District Detention Center in Shenzhen. They are accused of illegally crossing the border of the country. They are safe and requested the Marine Department to publicly confess the location of the 12 Hong Kong residents and the radar information of the vessels.
The police issued a statement on the evening of the 20th stating that on August 28, following the mutual notification mechanism, they received a notification from the Mainland law enforcement department that they arrested 12 Hong Kong residents in inland waters on August 23 for illegal entry into the Mainland (stealth). The police also stated that the navigation monitoring system recorded on the morning of August 23 did not find any mainland coast guard ships entering or staying in Hong Kong waters.

The police statement stated that after receiving the notification, the police immediately notified the families of the arrested persons and provided them with channels to seek help from the SAR government.

The statement stated that the Hong Kong police are also actively liaising with mainland law enforcement agencies to understand the progress of the case and follow up in due course.
