5G: where are the 500 antennas already being tested in the region?

2020-09-21T14:44:28.256Z

If the commercial exploitation of 5G has not yet started, many antennas have already been tested in major French cities.

After several months of delay, the auction of 5G frequencies between the authorities and the operators will begin on September 29, 2020. If the marketing of the first mobile plans will only take place at the beginning of the year 2021, many 5G antennas are broadcasting already in the sky of most major French metropolises, according to the mapping of the National Frequency Agency (ANFR) that we were able to consult.

These antennas are tested by the main French operators, but also by a host of partners, who are preparing to operate a network up to ten times more powerful than the 4G we know.

5G: why France is lagging behind its neighbors

A presence in most of the major French metropolises

The cartoradio.fr site, developed by the National Frequency Agency (ANFR), maps all the antennas available in our territory.

Unsurprisingly, it is in Ile-de-France that we find the greatest number of 5G devices.

Among the 108 machines counted in the region, 59 are in intramural Paris, like the one installed 179 meters above our heads, at the top of the Hyatt Regency hotel close to the Porte Maillot (17th century).

Not far from there, Saint-Denis, Boulogne-Billancourt and Issy-les-Moulineaux are the most equipped municipalities with respectively 18, 9 and 8 antennas already installed.

Elsewhere in France, Marseille is not left out.

The good mother is familiar with 95 new-generation branches in all of Marseille's 16 arrondissements.

The metropolis of Lille seems well positioned to initiate the shift to mobile broadband.

If 37 devices are already broadcasting from Lille itself, there are 89 antennas in nearly 20 towns in the metropolis.

Most of the big cities are concerned: Lyon, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Nantes or even Rouen.

Others are not yet on the map, including Nice, Strasbourg or Rennes.

Overseas, it is in Réunion that most of the tests are carried out.

There are 17 test points on the island of the Indian Ocean.

Orange at the head of pilot installations

The upcoming auctions will be decisive in determining which operator will take the lion's share of this emerging market.

According to the ANFR, Orange seems to be carrying out the most tests on our territory.

With 367 branches, the French giant is far ahead of its competitors: 67 for Bouygues, 43 for SFR and only 9 for Free.

According to Gilles Brégant, Director General of ANFR, "the deployment that will follow will depend on the operators' investment plan".

But not only.

“While most of these installations are carried out in a private setting between operator and lessor, it is not uncommon for the fixing of an antenna to be subject to a declaration of work.

In some cases, local elected officials could have their say, ”says the policeman of the French airwaves.

What are these experiments for?

The ANFR supervises the tests carried out from these antennas.

"The priority is to ensure that the new waves do not interfere with existing broadcasts: from the mobile antennas already present, to the communications of the gendarmerie through space observatories", lists the person in charge of authorizing the broadcasts. and to check whether they respect the thresholds set by the regulations.

The Electronic Communications Regulatory Authority (ARCEP) draws up a dashboard to monitor all the observations in progress on the 5G network.

In fact, most of these tests are open to operators, but also to research centers, start-ups, equipment manufacturers ... wishing to test applications in fields as vast as autonomous transport, video surveillance or even telemedecine.

5G: no "harmful effects in the short term", according to a report commissioned by the government

For example, the City of Science and Industry has joined forces with Nokia to open a 5G experimentation platform, intended to present a host of uses to the general public by the end of this year.

The Finnish giant is also present at the Vélodrome national de Montigny-le-Bretonneux (78), to focus on the coverage of sporting events.

In the sights: the Olympic Games in Paris, in 2024.

In Puteaux (92), Orange, Cisco and Icade are sketching the outlines of the next smart homes.

On the menu: "Internet of massive objects to improve the management of buildings, telemedicine services, high-end meeting rooms" according to ARCEP.

"We should quickly arrive at several thousand antennas in most of the large cities of France in the coming years", concludes Gilles Brégant, announcing that the deployment of the next network, 6G, is already under consideration.
