In the video: Lebanese president says the country is going to hell (Edit: Nir Chen)

Lebanese President Michel Aoun warned today (Monday) that the country is "on the road to hell" if a new government is not formed, given the disagreements between the various factions in the crumbling country.

His remarks illustrated the difficulties facing France's efforts to form a new government in Lebanon so that it could carry out economic and financial reforms in exchange for international aid.

The deadline set by Paris has already passed last week.

The crisis in Lebanon, exacerbated by the deadly explosion at the port of Beirut early last month, is the biggest threat facing the country since the civil war, which lasted from 1975 to 1990.

The main controversy is over the insistence of Hezbollah and Amal the Shiites to appoint Shiite ministers to positions in the cabinet, including the finance minister.

Aoun Christian, a Hezbollah ally, said he had offered an unacceptable compromise and described the deadlock as a confrontation between Shiite parties on the one hand, and designated Prime Minister Mustafa Adiv and past prime ministers - all Sunnis - on the other.

The president proposed abolishing the distribution of portfolios in the government according to an ethnic key, and also said that the designated prime minister should consult with the factions in parliament on the formation of the new coalition.

When asked at the end of his speech where Lebanon is headed without the understandings on the subject, the president replied: "Of course, to hell."

When asked by reporters if his remarks meant there was no hope for a new government, he replied: "No, there may be a miracle."

"Today we are facing a crisis in the formation of a government, which should not have happened because the events that await Lebanon do not allow us to spend even one minute," the president said in his speech, criticizing both Shiite parties and Adiv, the former Lebanese ambassador to Germany.

"Due to the hardening of positions, there seems to be no solution on the horizon, because all the bids are perceived as 'winners and losers'."
