8/10 for the Palihotel Culver City
New baby of the Palisociety chain, this 49-room boutique hotel has taken the place of the West End Hotel, formerly a guesthouse, whose complete facelift has perfectly matched the typical building of the 1920s. Planted on the roof of the building, the twinkling neon in the mauve Californian night evokes the golden age of the city where
ET
or the
Wizard of Oz
were filmed
.
8/10 The situation
Unknown to tourists, Culver City owes its fame to the film studios set up at the start of the 20th century and which can still be visited.
It is now Amazon (established in the former Culver Studios) Apple or HBO, which make the city a bohemian chic district, halfway between
seventies
village
and new town.
In a quiet residential side street, a few meters from the historic ArcLight cinema, the Pali House allows you to explore the neighborhood on foot and climb the Baldwin Hills for a 360-degree view of Los Angeles.
You can even skip the car altogether and cycle to Venice Beach in thirty minutes.
Just ten minutes' walk away is also Platform, a new kind of open-air shopping center, packed with trendy addresses like Monocle or Reformation boutiques, Blue Bottle Coffee and several restaurants with terraces.
10/10 The decor
If the framework inherited from the 1920s has been preserved, the building is dressed in a trendy cyan blue and the west wall entirely repainted with a floral fresco by artist Dana Carly.
Once inside, the harmony between contemporary atmosphere and Californian cool spirit is flawless, mixing wood, tiles and floral fabrics.
The rooms borrow more from the
fifties
spirit
with their light wood furniture, rounded mirrors and anthracite carpet.

8/10 The bedrooms
Arranged over three motel-style floors, the rooms create a surprise after a dreary hallway, with an astonishing combination of country-chic floral armchairs, tartan throws and quirky decorative touches, like these vintage handset phones.
Not very large but bright, they are really functional, with minibar, desks and large wardrobe.
Dressed in marble and white tiles, the bathrooms all have a walk-in shower.
Stripped by wooden shutters, the windows overlook both the outside and the patio, accessible from a few rooms on the ground floor, which can thus take advantage of this space but risk being hampered by the nuisance of the restaurant. the evening.
Some rooms will therefore have a view of the parking lot, brightened up by the neon lights of the neighboring cinema.
6/10 Service and facilities
No swimming pool, spa or gym: the Palihotel stands out for the lack of its equipment.
Fortunately, the concierge is very caring to offer good addresses and to inquire about your plans.
8/10 At the table and at the bar
On the ground floor, the adorable Simonette restaurant transports visitors to a decor resembling a Parisian bistro, with a green patio, including a real tree in the center of the tables.
The undeniable charm of the place invites you to stay for dinner or lunch.
Whatever time of day you can enjoy oysters, burgers, Nice salads and even profiteroles that can make their Parisian cousins blush.
In the evening, the barman creates original and refined cocktails, another good reason to linger on the terrace ...
