A New York City police officer has been arrested on charges of spying for China, federal prosecutors said Monday.
Baimadji Angwang, 33, who also served as a U.S. Army reservist, was arrested at his home on Long Island and brought to a Brooklyn court.
"This is the definition of an insider threat," said William Sweeney, deputy director of the FBI in New York.
He said Angwang, who was born in China and obtained citizenship in the United States, served in a foreign government service, lied to get a classification and used his position in the NYPD to help the Chinese government's subversive and illegal attempts to recruit intelligence sources.
According to the charges against him, Angwang has been acting as an agent since at least 2014.
He was also charged with network fraud and false statements.
He reported to Chinese consulate officials about the activities of Chinese citizens in the New York area and searched for potential intelligence sources among the local Tibetan community.
In addition, he told his operator in the Chinese government that he wanted to advance in the New York police so that he could help China and bring "glory to China."
The Consulate General of China in New York said its employees "fulfill their obligations under international law and United States law," and described their work as flawless.
