Donald Trump and the Supreme Court: his Senate majority could shake

2020-09-22T11:26:06.161Z

The US President wants to get a Conservative judge for the Supreme Court through the Senate before the election. But it is not clear whether the narrow Republican majority will hold.

Lindsey Graham has remained true to herself.

For him, that means: he has changed his position again.

The chairman of the judiciary committee in the US Senate had stressed two years ago that he would not vote if a judge's position in the Supreme Court had to be filled in the year of the presidential election.

After the death of the liberal judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg, he suddenly sounds very different: He will support President Donald Trump in all efforts to fill the vacant position, Graham tweeted at the weekend.

For the Democrats, who absolutely want to prevent this, this should not have been surprising news.

Graham is known to have the backbone of a jellyfish.

Almost all Republican senators are likely to think like Graham, even if most have not yet made public.

Taking a position against the president shortly before an election is politically extremely delicate.

However, the majority of Republicans in the Senate are tight.

The President's party has 53 seats.

The Democrats have 45 senators, plus two independents associated with them.
