Edward Snowden, the former CIA contractor who leaked intelligence secrets in 2013, agreed to hand over more than $ 5 million to the US government, according to court records.
The figure corresponds to earnings Snowden made from his book and from speaking fees, documents say.

The agency seeks to recoup profits from the publication.
That case is still ongoing, with a hearing scheduled for this week.

Snowden's Book and Speeches
Snowden, who lives in Russia, earned $ 4.2 million from his book sales, royalties and related rights this month.
Additionally, he gave 56 paid speeches that included revelations in violation of his secrecy agreement with the government.
This is indicated by court documents from his lawyers in the United States and the Department of Justice.
In all, Snowden earned about $ 1.03 million from the speeches, with an average fee of $ 18,000.

The money will be deposited into a trust, according to the plan agreed upon by Snowden and the Trump administration.
However, an attorney for Snowden pointed out that the settlement presented in court on Tuesday does not mean that the US government will be able to collect the money immediately.
In fact, he added, Snowden is considering appealing the judge's earlier decision that he was responsible for the disclosures.

He also noted that it can be difficult for the US government to access Snowden's funds if they remain outside the country.
The $ 4 million figure was Snowden's advance from his publisher to write his book, Lustberg said.
