If you're waiting for your $ 1,200 aid check, here's what to do

2020-09-22T20:01:54.458Z

The IRS is looking for millions of people to send help and has set two deadlines: We tell you what you need to do to avoid losing that money.

Six months after it was approved by Congress, there are still millions of people who have not received the aid check to face the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

But it is not too late

.

There is still time to submit the information to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and receive the money before the end of the year.

The benefits are $ 1,200 per person or $ 2,400 per marriage, plus an additional $ 500 for each dependent under the age of 17, and are delivered either as a direct deposit to a bank account or through checks sent by mail.

"The good news is that millions of Americans who haven't received pandemic-related help still have a chance to get their share. The bad news is that the IRS needs to find those people," said Jack Gillis, executive director of the Consumer Federation of America.

There are those who were excluded from their personal check but did not receive the aid for their children even though they were eligible.

And others who do not file taxes because they receive little or no income, and for whom the IRS does not have information to send the check.

To resolve both situations, the IRS set

two deadlines

for people to fill out their information on its online portal:

  • September 30th

If you receive Social Security benefits, Supplemental Security Income, or veteran or railroad retiree assistance, you

have until September 30 to enter information

for your dependents under the age of 17 on the IRS website.

This deadline is only for those people who did not enter their information before May 5.

Those who did send it after that date will receive benefits for their dependents in October.

And if you don't fill out your details before September 30, you can still receive the benefit, but as a credit when you fill out your tax form next year.

  • October 15th

This deadline is for those who do not file taxes either because they receive very little income or because they have none.

Although the IRS does not have information on these people, they are still eligible and have time to claim their benefit.

What they must do is

enter their data in the service portal before October 15

, to receive help within this year.

The IRS is notifying everyone to receive the aid check, sending 9 million letters, although not everyone who receives it is eligible, either because they do not have a valid social number or because they do not have a residency status.

People who can enter their data in the portal despite not filling out the tax forms are those who earn less than $ 12,000 per year or those married couples who collectively receive income of less than $ 24,000 per year.

Also those that do not work.
