"
We are already in contact with six (Mexicans) among those who could have been subject to this type of procedure (...) It is something unacceptable that we reject in advance
", declared Tuesday the Mexican Minister of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrard, at the daily press conference of President Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador.
The
foreign minister
said a "
consular alert
" had been issued in the United States, after an organization for the defense of migrants denounced last week of alleged forced sterilizations at a detention center in Irwin, Georgia (South).
Mexican consular staff are interviewing these six women to obtain more information and determine whether they may have been victims of this type of abuse, added the minister.
“
This needs to be cleared up.
In any case, if this is confirmed, it is a major subject and we must not only apply sanctions, but also take measures,
”he said.
Last week, the NGO Project South, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, reported that at least 17 women had been sterilized without their consent or without obtaining the necessary information.
The charges are said to be based in particular on the testimony of a nurse who worked in the Irwin detention center.
Elected Democrat in the House of Representatives, Pramila Jayapal called for an investigation in the United States to shed light on these accusations.
