More lows than heights with the bike check

Cycling is more popular than ever.

But how suitable are the municipalities for cycling?

We subjected them to a bike check and also interviewed experts.

Today in Germering.

Germering

- I quickly cross the intersection of Landsberger Strasse and Untere Bahnhofstrasse and suddenly have to stop abruptly.

The bike path ends in a sidewalk.

At walking pace I meander between the passers-by.

After a few meters, I am slowed down again: The cyclists are now directed onto a side path that they share with the cars.

But driving onto this street is not without danger, because vehicles leaving Landsberger Straße keep coming from behind at high speed.

Landsberger Strasse

The route along Landsberger Straße is characterized by this alternation of shared footpaths and bike paths as well as parallel side paths.

For Michael Sigmund from the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC), cycling there is a challenge.

“As soon as you reach the Germering sign, it becomes complicated and difficult,” he criticizes.

The paths are often too narrow for pedestrians and the mostly permitted two-way bicycle traffic.

Some curbs at junctions are not set off, so that one is shaken through there.

The red marked bicycle stripe at the intersection of Unterer Bahnhofstrasse and Landsberger Strasse is barely visible.

Sigmund considers the confluence of Valkyrie Street at the eastern entrance to the village to be a particularly dangerous area, as cyclists and motorists don't see each other until late.

In addition, the vehicles block the cycle path when turning.

“I would close the road.

Residents can drive onto Landsberger Strasse via Münchner Strasse, ”says Sigmund.

The city's bicycle officer, Thomas Wieser, doesn't think the situation is ideal either: “It's not that easy there, but you can't just hang out on the road.” Instead, he can imagine leaving the right-turn lane on Landsberger Straße and the cycle path to lead along there.

Wieser does not see the situation along Landsberger Strasse so negatively.

“Because of the parallel byways, we actually have a comfortable situation.

However, they do not go through completely. ”There is currently a gap between Oberen and Untere Bahnhofstrasse, which the city wants to close.

"We want to upgrade the cycle path on the north side so that it can be used from both directions, because the connection is of supra-local importance."

The city also sees room for improvement at the intersection of Unterer Bahnhofstrasse and Landsberger Strasse.

It is to be rebuilt in the medium term.

Wieser can imagine a roundabout there.

Problem spots

Most of the cyclists on the Untere Bahnhofstrasse are on the road with their cars.

“I'm really a tough cyclist, but I never ride here.

It's really life-threatening, ”says Sigmund.

He wants bicycle protection strips on the right and left.

But parking would have to give way.

Improvements on the Untere Bahnhofstrasse are so important for Sigmund because up to now there has been "no sensible and continuous north-south crossing for cyclists".

Sigmund praises the new cycle path that runs along the state road in the north.

However, this ends at Landsberger Straße.

"I live in Harthaus and it annoys me that I can't drive in a straight line to the hardware store or the cinema, but have to meander through the residential area," criticizes Sigmund.

The ADFC spokesman could imagine converting a lane of the state road into a cycle path.

"The road with its four lanes is no longer necessary because there is now a motorway bypass."

Another nuisance for Sigmund is the northern part of Streiflacher Straße.

The route is often used by cyclists because the railway line can be crossed there and many students cycle to the Max-Born-Gymnasium.

However, it is often crowded because of the parked cars and bus traffic.

The city missed a good opportunity to create a cycle lane when the adjacent property was recently redeveloped.

But instead of a protective strip there is now a large parking lot.

Good solutions

Sigmund has a lot of praise for the covered parking facility at Germering-Unterpfaffenhofen station.

He would also be pleased about the planned bicycle route through the Frühlingstrasse, Südendstrasse and Eisenbahnstrasse.

"The large 30s zones are also positive."

Bike repair

Repair options and an air pump are available at the train stations and behind the town hall.

Such a service station is also planned for Lake Germeringer.

Future In addition to upgrading the cycle path on Landsberger Straße, the city will issue a parking ban on both sides of the lower Bahnhofstraße in order to mark cycle lanes.

In addition, the Fahrradstraße as an east-west connection is in the starting blocks.

"It has been approved and should actually have come this year, but because a position in the administration is not filled at the moment, it will take a little longer," said Wieser.

Conclusion

If Germering implements all of his plans, a lot will be gained for cyclists.

At the moment, however, there are still a few places where you should cycle with caution.
