1. SPD escalation
The thing about Saskia Esken is that she actually acts exactly as you would expect from a left-wing SPD leader.
Her opinion on the subject of racism in the police force or the handling of "Covidiots", for example, made her, I paraphrase, distinguishable.
Nevertheless,
the party double leadership with Norbert Walter-Borjans has long since ceased to be celebrated as an "escalation"
.
If you are not a member of the SPD or, of all people, Olaf Scholz or Kevin Kühnert, then there is something refreshing about Esken's unpredictability.
But if you want to unite wings and reconcile different characters, you have
a tough job with the current SPD leadership
.
My colleague Lydia Rosenfelder and my colleague Christian Teevs put all of this very aptly some time ago.

SPD leader Saskia Esken: Please select the appropriate wording yourself
Photo: DER SPIEGEL
Precisely for this reason, it was
interesting
for my
colleague Markus Feldenkirchen
today
to invite
the SPD chairwoman to the
SPIEGEL top-level talk
(watch the whole conversation in the video here)
There they talked, among other things, about the sexist joke / the misleading statement (please choose the appropriate wording yourself) by Christian Lindner, his former Secretary General Linda Teuteberg and Horst Seehofer.
(Incidentally, our columnist Margarete Stokowski also made some suggestions on this subject - keyword "dog training", but read for yourself.)
Esken immediately had
a pointed opinion
about
Friedrich Merz
.
The CDU candidate for chancellor / German business lawyer with CDU membership card (please select the appropriate wording yourself) had associated homosexuals with criminals and pedagogical criminals.
Esken said it was "the abyss into which we are looking".
At least most of the SPD members shouldn't contradict this this time.

Virologist Christian Drosten: According to the Office of the Federal President, he "provided important and globally recognized findings on the infection process".

Seven women and eight men will be awarded the
Order of Merit of
the Federal Republic of Germany
at the beginning of October
.
The virologist Christian Drosten is also honored.
I'm sure that's okay from a technical point of view.
He is one of the leading scientists in his field both nationally and internationally.
Its role in
combating the corona pandemic is remarkable
.
His skirmishes with Hendrik "Please hear my opinion" Streeck and the "Bild" newspaper are legendary, but actually tell more about Streeck and the "Bild" than about Drosten.
I also noticed something else: Christian Drosten has managed to reunite people.
He started
a digital campfire
.
Admittedly, in an exceptional situation.
But nothing had a greater effect in this crisis than the "Coronavirus Update".
A country sat on the receivers like at the soccer world championship.
We listened to this podcast from
across all social classes
, and if we couldn't put something properly into our own words, we sent our parents a link to individual episodes via WhatsApp.
I asked Korinna Hennig what she said about the award.
She is the science editor of "NDR Info" and her voice has accompanied us in times of crisis.
She says: "With the coronavirus update, Christian Drosten is doing something that
goes far beyond normal science communication
. I am happy for him because I know how much time he takes to explain complex relationships in an understandable manner."
I also always preferred to have a quiet, fact-based, and
perhaps a bit weird, virologist
on
my
ear.
And to be able to do it at all under immense pressure is pretty excellent.

Short self-test: As much as
how many soccer fields
do you get annoyed by the
topic of climate change
and satellite measurements in the Arctic?
The answer doesn't really matter, because the
Arctic ice is
melting and melting faster than you can tweet about it ironically.
So the facts from my colleague Christoph Seidler in three
mouth-watering tweets
, which you
can cut out
directly as a thread
with the correct number of characters
:
"Hello Followers! We have a problem: The ice in the Arctic has shrunk particularly strongly this year. Only once in more than 40 years has it expanded even further. #Iceicebaby #Klimawandel"
(212 characters)
"That is really bad because: The Arctic has been warming about twice as fast as all other regions of the world for around three decades. This is changing the region's ecosystems massively and causing problems for polar bears and seals, for example."
(243 characters)
"Researchers assume that the Arctic has now entered a new climate regime. This means: Regardless of the annual variability, the Arctic has meanwhile warmed so much that the temperatures were outside the limits of previous years. Good luck!"

Jan Fedder's Ford Explorer and last "Metropolitan Area" car "Bronko"
Photo: Daniel Reinhardt / picture alliance / dpa
Marion Fedder
didn't hesitate long, we write in our report, and when it comes to the actor and the
"Großstadtrevier" legend Jan Fedder
, as the real newsletter from Hamburg we don't hesitate and announce that "Bronko" has been sold.
Are you not from Hamburg?
Well, then we have to go into the deepening of the Elbe for a moment:
"Bronko", a Ford Explorer
, was Fedder's car and played a major role in his life.
Somewhat ominously it says: "Bronko" was not only the favorite of the actor on the film set of the "Großstadtrevier", but also privately.
Anyway, we're not that into the local color either.
Now the car has been auctioned ("There are signs of use. TÜV until July 2021").
Result: 61,201 euros.
And what does the late actor's widow do with the money?
She donates it to the
Hamburg Michel
, on whose church square a plaque commemorates the popular actor since the beginning of September.
Refuel nicely!

Writer Juli Zeh: Sometimes it's in a well-stocked house library
Photo: Kay Nietfeld / dpa
Some time ago I did a father's podcast with two friends whose "punch line" was that in the end a woman always had a say.
She then said how she thought of the episode.
I really wanted
the writer Juli Zeh to take on this task
, and after we had the recording done (as we say podcast boys), we chatted a little longer.
You in your house in the country, I in my office in Hamburg.
When I was recently in a house in the country for a short time, I remembered this conversation and from the
well-stocked house library
, so, yes, it was an IKEA shelf with books that other visitors had left there , took out a book by Juli Zeh and read it.
Because
literature
recommendations
are always so terribly vain
and you don't have time to read a long book until tomorrow anyway, I recommend you watch the film adaptation of "Unter Menschen".
Or read your last book "New Year", which is nice and short.
There Juli writes from the perspective of a
completely overwhelmed man
.
Sounded very familiar.
Have a good evening!
Yours Jonas Leppin
