The Italians voted to cut the number of MPs by a third
An overwhelming majority supported the referendum to reduce the 945 members to just 600, in an initiative promoted by the ruling five-star party: "Historical result, we will save a billion euros."
Opponents argue for the weakening of democracy.
At the same time, Slavini's far-right failed to register achievements in the district elections

Voters in Italy have supported cutting the number of MPs in the country by more than a third.
According to a majority of votes, about 70% of voters voted in favor of the changes, in which the parliament - consisting of a senate and a lower house - will be cut from 945 members to 600.
The Five Star Movement, which is the largest party in the coalition, promoted the referendum and said it would reduce government spending and contribute to the fight against corruption.
The changes in the number of legislators will have to be made before the next election, in 2023, and these have already been promoted in Parliament itself.
However, it was necessary to back them up in a referendum.
Foreign Minister Luigi Di Mayo, a five-star executive, described the result as "historic."
He said, "Now we can go back to having a normal parliament, with fewer privileges and 345 fewer seats."
The party claims that tightening the parliament's decree will save the country a billion euros over a decade, but opponents of the initiative say it will weaken democracy.
The referendum took place in parallel with regional elections in several important districts, in which the leader of the far-right "League" party, Matteo Slavini, was hit.
On the other hand, the Democratic Party from the center-left, which is also a coalition partner, has strengthened its position.

Slavini had hoped to rake in big gains in the election, which took place in the shadow of Italy's attempt to recover from the corona plague, but the almost final results show that the right won only in Marca province and retained power in two other provinces.
The left has maintained its grip on three provinces, including Tuscany, a historic stronghold of the left in Italy that has been marked as a destination by Slavini.
Tuscan left-wing candidate Eugenio Gianni said the election success was an "extraordinary victory".
The election results signal that Slavini, the former interior minister, continues to lose height.
His party remains the most popular in Italy, but support for it has been steadily declining in polls over the past year, alongside personal support percentages for the leader.
Another sign of concern for him was the landslide victory of Veneto County President and party member Luca Zaya.
Whoever was perceived as a possible candidate for the leadership of the party, received 75% of the vote and retained his seat.
