The United Nations General Assembly in New York, in the presence of the permanent representative of Syria, Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari, opened this morning the week’s high-level work under the title “The future we want and the United Nations we need ... reaffirming our collective commitment to pluralism and confronting COVID-19 through effective multilateral action.”

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, presented his annual report on the work of the General Assembly during the previous session and spoke in his opening statement about the challenges facing humanity in light of the Corona epidemic, as well as the security, political, social and economic challenges facing the United Nations after 75 years of its establishment.

Dr. Al-Jaafari said in a statement to SANA that the work of the current session coincides with the celebration of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations, and the general debate that is held at the beginning of each session of the General Assembly provides an opportunity for world leaders to make statements on various global issues and present their countries' positions on them, as it is expected that The economic, social and health challenges that the countries of the world face due to the Covid-19 pandemic dominate the facts of the current cycle.

Dr. Al-Jaafari pointed out that during this high-level week, the UN General Assembly will present pre-recorded speeches to leaders and senior officials of states, after their presentation by the permanent representatives of the member states.

For the first time in the history of the United Nations, the week’s high-level work is being held without the actual participation of world leaders and senior officials, due to restrictions imposed on the United Nations headquarters, which continue to limit the ability to hold personal meetings as a result of the current conditions associated with the spread of the Coronavirus Covid 19.
