Under the influence of the new crown pneumonia epidemic, the aviation industry has been greatly affected. Cathay Pacific has not applied for a new round of employment guarantee funds, which is regarded as a precursor to layoffs. According to reports, Cathay Pacific recently estimated that Cathay Pacific and Dragonair’s surplus front-line staff would reach at least 6,800, which may “pave the way” for layoffs. The Dragon Airlines Flight Crew Association stated that the company has a lot of rumors about layoffs and employees are worried.

Yesterday the union also met with the company on the rumors of layoffs, but the other party did not provide information.

"Apple Daily" quoted Cathay Pacific news reports today (23), saying that Cathay Pacific, Dragonair and their subordinate Hong Kong Express have arranged some passenger planes to park overseas in response to reduced passenger demand.

According to Cathay Pacific’s announcement earlier that 40% of its fleet will be parked overseas, there will be a large surplus of manpower.

At present, Cathay Pacific has 4,000 pilots and 13,000 crew members in the three airlines. It is conservatively estimated that there are about 1,200 surplus pilots, 5,000 more crew members, and about 600 more ground crew members. There are a total of 6,800 surplus staff.

The report also pointed out that Cathay Pacific expects to announce the staffing arrangements at the beginning of next month as soon as possible, but it is still unknown whether the surplus staff will eventually be laid off.

The report also stated that the Cathay Pacific Dragon Pilots Union had submitted several proposals to the management, including advocating a plan to halve the monthly salary starting next month until December next year.

Regarding the news, Liang Peiyun, vice chairman of the Dragon Airlines Air Crew Association, said that although the company has not actually heard the news, there are a large number of rumors of layoffs that make employees very worried.

She said that Dragonair has about 2,000 aircrews and described that "(layoffs) have a big impact." She believes that the number of surplus workers of 6,800 is astonishing and the union does not approve of any layoff plan.

Liang Peiyun also said that yesterday (23) had a meeting with the management, but the process was mainly reflected by the union's opinions, including expressing employees' worries about layoffs.

She said that although the company expressed its willingness to listen to opinions and understands the staff's worries, it was unable to provide more information at this stage and only said that it would be notified in due course.

She continued that since the company currently has no clear plan, the union cannot provide specific suggestions to avoid layoffs.

A Cathay Pacific spokesperson said that it had recently met with the Cathay Dragon Pilots Union and will continue to maintain communication with various employee groups. The management is currently considering all options with an open attitude and will discuss the airline's future operating scale and Model, to make recommendations to the board of directors to respond to global air travel needs and maintain the company’s financial health at a healthy level.

Cathay Pacific continued to point out that it plans to explain the company's future plans and other details to all colleagues as soon as possible in the fourth quarter.
