The government of Donald Trump announced Wednesday that it will prohibit Americans visiting Cuba from buying cigars and rum, and staying in hotels owned by the Cuban government.

"Today, as part of our ongoing fight against communist oppression, I am announcing that the Treasury Department will prohibit US travelers from staying in Cuban government property," Trump said at a White House event honoring veterans. from the Bay of Pigs.

"We are also restricting even more the importation of Cuban alcohol and Cuban tobacco," he added.

"These actions will ensure that US dollars do not finance the Cuban regime and go directly to the Cuban people," said the president.

The increase in sanctions further cools the rapprochement of relations fostered by the Obama administration with the communist-run island.

Authorizations of the Trump Government to travel to Cuba change

The Trump administration is also removing blanket authorizations for US citizens to travel to Cuba for sporting events.

Also for trips to attend shows or professional meetings and conferences.

Now US citizens who want to travel to Cuba for those activities will have to apply for a specific license, according to a statement from the Treasury Department.

The announcement is unlikely to have an immediate impact on the Cuban economy.

The Cuban government closed the borders almost six months ago.

Additionally, all commercial flights from the United States have been suspended as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

Previously, the State Department provided a list of restricted entities, including several hotels, which the United States claims are "under the control of, or acting for or on behalf of, the Cuban military, intelligence or security services or personnel with the that direct financial transactions would disproportionately benefit said services or personnel at the expense of the Cuban people or private companies in Cuba.
