The European Union announced Thursday morning that it did not recognize Alexander Lukashenko as President of Belarus, the day after his unexpected swearing in.
“
The EU reaffirms that the presidential election of August 9 in Belarus was neither free nor fair, and does not recognize its falsified results,”
the senior representative of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, said in a statement.
The Belarusian head of state claims his victory in the presidential election, held on August 9, with a score of 80%.
For a month and a half, demonstrations that bring together tens of thousands of people in the street every week have contested these results.
The first days of the movement were marked by very violent repression and the arrest of thousands of people.
Since then, most of the opposition figures have been imprisoned or forced into exile.
While condemnations are mounting across Europe against an election deemed fraudulent, the United States also said on Wednesday that it did not recognize the legitimacy of Alexander Lukashenko.
