Among the leaders of the opposition to approving the general closure at the cabinet meeting tonight (Thursday) was Science Minister Yizhar Shai, a member of the Corona Cabinet.

The minister left the sitting in the middle as a sign of protest against the decision and left a note with his opposition in the vote.

Before he left, he sharply criticized the way decisions were made, the way in which Prime Minister

Benjamin Netanyahu bypassed the Corona cabinet and silenced the professionals, and the legislation that would limit the demonstrations.

"We are going to vote tonight on a decision on a historic scale without a proper process being carried out to examine all the possible aspects of this decision in the Corona Cabinet," Shai told ministers.

"It's important for all of you to know: late Tuesday night the Corona Cabinet dispersed with a series of decisions and directions for further discussion. But on Wednesday morning it all took a turn and a complete reversal, the discussion did not go as planned."

Shai is expected to meet in the coming hours with blue and white chairman Bnei Gantz to discuss the possibility of him resigning from the government in light of the decision on the total closure.

"The decision on a full closure was not made by a vote in the Corona Cabinet, and is contrary to expert opinion"

The Minister of Science noted that the discussion took place intermittently without a vote or an orderly summary in the Corona Cabinet.

According to Shai, "There was a decision between the Prime Minister, the Minister of Defense, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of the Interior in a telephone discussion between them and this is the decision before us now. We have just heard details of this decision, but none of us, members of the Corona Cabinet, saw all the details. I know what we are talking about, but I do not know the exact details of this decision. "

"It is important that government ministers know," Shai stressed.

"The decision on a full closure, worse than the one we experienced in March, was not made in a vote in the Corona Cabinet, it is contrary to the opinion of Ministry of Health experts, investigators and Finance Ministry professionals who spoke before the Cabinet."

The minister quoted Finance Ministry chief economist Shira Greenberg as saying "this will be an unprecedented closure, the most severe that any other country has taken all over the world during this epidemic since it began, and the damage will be long-term. It will mean unprecedented unemployment, business collapse" "Unimaginable costs, huge budget deficits and heavy, long-term social implications."

"Leaving synagogues open hurts the public"

At the heart of the dispute between members of the Corona Cabinet and government ministers were prayers and demonstrations.

While Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Interior Minister Aryeh Deri demanded to limit the weekly protests in front of the Prime Minister's Residence in Jerusalem, ministers in blue and white expressed opposition. The

decision to impose a general closure stipulated that prayers continue until Yom Kippur, depending on the size of the synagogue and capsules. - In accordance with Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit's outline - the demonstrations in Balfour will be limited to 2,000 participants, and in capsules.

At the heart of the controversy.

Shai protested against the fact that synagogues are not closed on Yom Kippur, but on the other hand, a law is passed restricting the demonstrations.

He turned to Minister Deri and said: "You are leaving the synagogues open in this historic closure and in the same breath harming another public in Israel. So I will tell you: what we are doing here now is not an injustice to the secular public in Israel, it is an injustice to the religious public. Synagogues are open and close other things. "

The Minister of Science even attacked Netanyahu for "wasting endless time in a fruitless debate over the demonstrations." He added that "and after we decided to transfer the issue to a professional team, not politicians, we did not even hold a discussion on the outline we asked them to bring before us."

Shai called on blue and white ministers to vote against the law restricting the demonstrations. "This is a law that does injustice to a huge public in Israel. It is a cynical, inappropriate and unnecessarily divisive law. A government that hurts the pain of its citizens and understands their hearts at this dramatic time does not bring such a law to the Knesset for quick, almost abductive Knesset legislation on Yom Kippur."

Along with Shai, ministers Israel Katz, Orit Farkash-Hacohen, Amir Peretz and Itzik Shmuli also opposed the imposition of a general closure. The closure will take effect from tomorrow at 14:00 until Simchat Torah, during which the restrictions that began on Rosh Hashanah will be tightened: business and private sector activity will cease except for essential workers, public transportation will be reduced and markets will be closed.
