Drilling is currently taking place in the Isar-Loisach Stadium.

This is to determine the radon concentration in the soil air.

Wolfratshausen

- In the Flößerstadt it is currently being determined how high the radon concentration in the soil air is.

This was announced by Vice Mayor Günther Eibl (CSU) on behalf of Town Hall Chief Klaus Heilinglechner (BVW) at the latest city council meeting.

A parcel on Kräuterstraße, specifically the Isar-Loisach Stadium, was selected for the investigation.

The radioactive decay of uranium-238 in the earth produces radium, which in turn breaks down into the chemical element radon.

With other soil gases, this naturally occurring radioactive noble gas escapes from the soil to the earth's surface and thus into the atmosphere.

The more crevices and cracks the subsurface has, the easier it is for radon to spread.

In some places, according to research by the city administration, the radon concentration in the soil air can be “well above the values typical for the region” - for example in crevices, subsidence or the boundary between two types of rock.

That means: The radon concentration in the soil varies from region to region.

Drilling is expected to last through September 30th

The federal radiation protection law stipulates that the federal states determine by December 31 of this year in which areas an above-average radon concentration is to be expected.

The Bavarian State Office for the Environment (LfU) has commissioned an expert office to carry out measurements at selected locations.

The LfU also determined the parcel in question in the Flößerstadt.

In the Isar-Loisach-Stadion “a total of three drill holes with a diameter of about four centimeters and a depth of about one meter will be made in the edge area on unsealed subsurface,” announced Vice Mayor Eibl.

With the help of a probe, the soil air is then pumped out and the radon concentration measured.

The time required for each location is around half a day; the work on site is expected to take until September 30th.

Games in the stadium can take place without restrictions.
