Few deceased are honored by keeping their coffin in the U.S. Capitol - especially when it comes to women.

In 2005, the black civil rights activist Rosa Parks was the first American woman to receive this honor.

Now top politicians from Democrats and Republicans have said goodbye to Ruth Bader Ginsburg in this way.

The Supreme Court judge died last Friday at the age of 87.

She is the first woman and person of the Jewish faith to receive the Lie in State honor.

The honor has been bestowed on fewer than three dozen people, mostly presidents, vice-presidents, and members of Congress.

Parks had been honored as a private woman, which is why the honor was called "Lie in Honor".

"May she rest in peace," said the chairwoman of the House of Representatives, Democrat Nancy Pelosi, about Ginsburg.

Pelosi praised Ginsburg as "one of the greatest American women".

Members of the Senate and House of Representatives attended the ceremony to bid farewell to the lawyer.

However, some prominent Republicans like Mitch McConnell, majority leader in the Senate, were missing.

The Democratic presidential candidate and ex-Senator Joe Biden was there, as was Kamala Harris, Democratic candidate for vice presidency.

Ginsburg's former fitness trainer Bryant Johnson stood out from the crowd.

He knelt in front of the coffin and did three push-ups.

The video quickly made the rounds on social networks.

Ginsburg was known for practicing iron sports even in old age.

In 2016 the judge, who was 83 at the time, said she always did ten push-ups in her training, "then I breathe, then I do ten more".

On Wednesday and Thursday, numerous people thought of the popular judge at the coffin laid out at the Supreme Court - the US Supreme Court.

US President Donald Trump was there too, but he was booed during his visit.

A bitter dispute between Democrats and Republicans has broken out over the replacement of the vacant post in the influential court (read more here).

As President, Trump has the right to propose and wants to fill the post as quickly as possible.

The Democrats absolutely want to prevent this.

They are demanding that the winner of the presidential election on November 3 propose the successor to Ginsburg - in the hope that Biden will win against Trump.
