Alain Terzian: "At the Caesar, I was murdered with incredible violence"

2020-09-25T05:05:43.376Z

EXCLUSIVE - The producer of the Visitors speaks for the first time since his resignation from the presidency of the Caesar in February. He says he is not involved in the scandals that complicate the elections scheduled for Tuesday, September 29 to appoint the new board of directors of the French cinema academy.

Seven months of silence.

Seven months to digest his ouster.

The only consolation: his entire board of directors, including his dear Costa Gavras, Claude Lelouch, Gilles Jacob, Danièle Thompson and Philippe Labro have resigned with him.

At the end of September, 72 hours before the election of the presidency and the board of directors of the Caesar, the tone rises again in the great "family" of French seventh art.

Last week, 120 of the 164 new members of the general assembly of the Césars including Marina Foïs and Guillaume Gallienne published an open letter in which they say they are “

betrayed

” by the “historical” members of the institution.

Monday, September 14 at the same time as the proclamation of the voting results of the 164 members of the general assembly, they discovered a secret list of 18 elders (out of the 45 of the old team) who asked to keep their mandate.

By avoiding going through the ordeal of the election and without respecting parity since they are 16 men for 2 women.

The discovery of this list containing the names of Roman Polanski, Thomas Langmann but also of Alain Terzian set fire to the powders.

Le FIGARO .- You attended the 45th Caesar ceremony where Adèle Haenel slammed the door.

And then ?

Alain TERZIAN .-

I asked for mediation from the CNC (National Cinema Center) to help modernize the institution and I left.

I never took care of anything again.

I no longer set foot in the Caesar office.

I no longer attended a meeting.

Neither at the CNC nor at any General Assembly.

For the vote on the new statutes of July 9, I gave a proxy.

I will not be attending any future Caesar meetings like next Tuesday's general assembly, for example.

How did you manage not to get involved in the modernization of this institution, over which you ruled for seventeen years?

I was murdered with incredible violence that I do not wish on my best enemy.

The very personal attacks were disproportionate.

I drew the consequences.

You have to know how to withdraw.

Too bad if some have forgotten that I had saved the Caesars from bankruptcy.

It's unfair but that's how it is.

I cleared the three million euros of debt by acting as guarantor with the banks on a personal basis.

I did not participate directly or indirectly in the drafting of the new statutes.

I was not part of any of the working groups.

It was all too hard for me.

For your name to appear in the list of ex officio members of the new general assembly, you nevertheless had to request it in writing between July 10 and July 31 ...

I didn't ask for anything, I didn't do anything, it was undoubtedly my secretary who sent the letter, thinking I was doing the right thing.

Ditto for Roman Polanski.

I can't imagine him sending a letter to stay with the Caesars.

I have never attended a general assembly of the institution once.

Why do you want him to suddenly take an interest in it?

You know, the elders don't give a damn about power within the Caesars.

Contrary to what some think, the Caesars are not a revolutionary union, nor a political body of the cinema.

Are you a candidate for the new Board of Directors and for the presidency of the Caesars?

I am not running for any position.

Neither on the board of directors, nor on the chairmanship nor on the new Supervisory Board.

The page is turned for me.

What do you wish for the young generation who will no doubt take over the house on Tuesday evening?

Long life and good luck.

They won't have to worry about finances.

I left them a reserve fund of 700,000 euros in the coffers.

Enough to be quiet for at least a year.

It is now up to them to restart the machine and prepare for the next ceremony.

It's up to them to make us dream and talk to us about cinema.

The César are a dream showcase born thanks to Georges Cravenne who admired the Oscars.
