Building 72,000 square meters, the Grand Palais was built for the Universal Exhibition of 1900. Originally all in one piece, its use has “split up” over the years: the site houses a restaurant (Le Mini Palais), a glass and steel nave, the national galleries in which exhibitions are organized, the Discovery Palace, offices, but also a police station and the company of the guards of the Elysee.
Added to this is what Chris Dercon, president of the RMN-Grand Palais, calls
“hidden spaces”
, condemned for lack of standards - including the Fernand Léger lounge.
The whole of the "technique" of the building will be rethought, with the aim of controlling heating or air conditioning expenses.
The restoration work will aim not only to bring the building up to standard, to save its statuary or continue the restoration of the facade, but also to make it “fluid” and luminous: from spring 2025 the monument will be open from east to west, and the public will be able to cross it freely.
