Judge Ginsburg receives funeral honors on Capitol Hill

Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg receives honors this Friday at the Capitol, thus becoming the first in public office to receive honors from State there.

Former Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden is present, as is California Democratic Senator and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Lawmakers hold a formal ceremony for Ginsburg at the National Statuary Hall inside the Capitol starting at 10:00 am ET, after the casket with the mortal remains arrived in the outer plaza half an hour earlier.

Ginsburg is

the first woman in public office and the first Jewish person to stand on Capitol Hill before being buried

, according to historical records.

Civil rights activist Rosa Parks was the first civilian woman to receive honors in the building.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Democrat from California, also participates in the ceremony, which includes a preaching by Lauren Holtzblatt, a rabbi from the conservative DC Adas Israel synagogue who also prayed during the ceremony honoring the judge. in Supreme Court on Wednesday.

There will be two musical selections by American operatic soprano Denyce Graves, who will be accompanied by pianist Laura Ward.

A formal departure ceremony will then begin when the coffin with Ginsburg's remains leaves the Capitol at around 12:30 pm.

According to the architect of the Capitol, Ginsburg is the second person to have served on the Supreme Court and to receive funeral honors on the Capitol.

The first person was William Howard Taft, who was not only president of the Supreme Court, but also a past president.

Ginsburg died last Friday at the age of 87 at his home in Washington, DC, following complications from pancreatic cancer. 

She was the second female magistrate in the Supreme Court and served for more than 27 years.

The final goodbye to the judge will take place at Arlington National Cemetery next week where she will be buried.
