Look at and enjoy orchards, that was what the visitors could do in wonderful weather on the first “Open Orchard Meadow Day”.

In and around Weilheim, horticultural associations and private individuals had invited to visit such areas.

- Many visitors explored the meadows on foot or by bike, such as the orchards on Gut Dietlhofen, the orchards on the Ammer with over 150 high trees, the orchards on the "Gmünder Hof" or the orchards in Birkland.

The supporting program also included guided tours.

There was a lot of activity on the meadow orchards in the Polling monastery garden.

There, visitors could enjoy the 53 trees - mainly apple trees - of old varieties such as "Rambur", "Goldparmäne", "Bellefleur" and "Kaiser Wilhelm" on the approximately 6000 square meter area.

"We have leased the garden from Pollingen monastery for two years," says Maria Hager, chairwoman of the local horticultural association.

"After we looked for tree sponsors for our trees, 40 people signed up to look after the trees all year round." The tree sponsors had donated cakes for the day of action, which found plenty of sales because benches and tables were set up under the trees.

The proceeds of the cake sale will benefit social institutions.

At the "Open Orchard Meadows Day" in Polling, children could listen to a storyteller in the shade of the trees.

In the teaching garden in Wielenbach, the response to the action day was low.

Angelika Balser, chairwoman of the horticultural association, attributes this to the fact that no supporting program was offered.

"We deliberately refrained from doing so because of Corona," said Balser.

On the still young plant - it has existed since 2006 - there are 16 trees, from the service tree to the whitebeam to the edible medlar.

The loquat needs the frost to be particularly tasty, and whitberries can be made into excellent schnapps, as was learned in the teaching garden.

"We offer a cross-section of the orchard," says Balser.

The members of their association are allowed to harvest fruit in the usual household quantities on the orchard meadow.
