woman: Sandra Gern received the German Radio Prize in the “Best Show” category.

She received an award in Hamburg for the music magazine "Chelsea Hotel", which she moderates and which can be heard weekly on the private broadcaster egoFM.

Due to the corona, the celebration took place in a small group - in contrast to the award ceremony in the previous year, when almost 1,000 guests came to the Elbphilharmonie.

“It was a very nice event,” enthuses Sandra Gern, who took a few days off.

"Then we want to think about how we can celebrate that with the team at the station," she says.

The young presenter convinced the jury "with the special flair of her music show Chelsea Hotel," says the reasoning.

The jury appointed by the Grimme Institute is of the opinion that the format is a “gem among music broadcasts”.

It literally says: “Aside from the mainstream, presenter Sandra Gern also gives room to styles that are otherwise rarely on the radio.” The award winner shows “that music moderation can be casual and at the same time fact-based”.

The laudation was given by Volker Bruch, who was awarded the Golden Camera in 2018 as best German actor.

Her passion for music has roots in Bad Tölz, says the radio producer.

“Back then, during my high school years, I hung up in the subspace,” recalls Sandra Gern.

She also enjoyed doing that during her subsequent studies and TV internships in Salzburg and Munich.

The application to the radio station egoFM was a direct hit.

“I was accepted straight away.” After just two years, she got her own show, which runs every Thursday at 8 p.m.

In the meantime she is not only Head of Duty (CvD) but also Deputy Program Manager.

"Tölz was cool"

Sandra Gern had her first radio contact when she was 13. “At that time I wrote an email to a Bavarian broadcaster asking if they could play something else.” The teenager sent a dozen music suggestions along with it.

“I got a very nice answer that said that my music didn't suit the target group of the station.” The regular listeners at egoFM are - how could it be otherwise - young people.

"Our main target group are the 20 to 40 year olds."

She still fondly remembers the scene in the small town back then.

“Tölz was cool,” she says.

The high school promoted music, choir, dance and theater.

That appealed to a lot of creative people, says Gern.

"And when I look around: I know a lot of former classmates from the Tölzer area who are now active in the media industry."

She describes her show as "her little baby".

“Chelsea Hotel” lives off “that I am passionate about this music”.
