Russian army planes are participating in maneuvers as part of the "Caucasus 2020" on Friday, several sequences of which took place on the banks of the Caspian.
The major annual exercises of the Russian army took place in an unstable geostrategic zone bathed by two coveted maritime spaces.
The Caspian, seen from the coastal town of Kaspiisk, Dagestan, is not very engaging.
Huge but desolate beaches resembling wasteland where swimming in gray water is prohibited.
Tall buildings, mostly empty, or under construction, whose construction seems to have come to a stop.
The Russian shore of the Black Sea, less than an hour and a half flight further west, is at first glance more welcoming, with its seaside resorts and vine-covered hills.
But both are, each in their own way, under tension.
