Donald Trump apparently wants to nominate judge Amy Coney Barrett as the successor to the late Supreme Court judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

The New York Times and CNN report unanimously, citing anonymous sources from the Republican Party.

The US President wanted to announce the decision on Saturday, it said.

Should Trump actually decide in favor of the 48-year-old, the conservative judges at the Supreme Court would have a majority of six to three seats in the future.

The judge Barbara Lagoa had recently been in the shortlist.

According to the New York Times, Barrett is said to be the only candidate Trump met this week.

Blocking of personnel in the Senate is considered unlikely

After the death of the liberal judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the Democrats fear a shift to the right in the Supreme Court - and thus potentially in American society in general.

They are demanding that the appointment be postponed until after the presidential election on November 3rd.

The Republicans have a majority in the Senate, which must approve the nomination.

According to the dpa news agency, it currently does not look as if there will be a blockade there.

The judges at the Supreme Court are appointed for life.

Thus Trump could cement a clear conservative majority there for many years to come.

During his term of office he has already filled two other vacant positions with candidates of his choice.

Barrett was nominated by Trump in 2017 for a seat on the federal appeals court in Chicago.

Opponents of stricter abortion law fear that, as a constitutional judge, she would vote to overturn a 1973 Supreme Court ruling that established a nationwide right to abortion.
