Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova described the deletion of Russian pages on the social networking site Facebook as interference in the internal affairs of her country by the company.
In an interview with "Russia 24" channel today, Zakharova said, "What Facebook is practicing is a purge of the media," adding, "We can call this censorship or anything else while we are aware of the purpose behind it."
Zakharova pointed out that the Facebook announcement to delete Russian pages shows that "there are hostile acts by Russia towards the United States, society and users," adding that blocking pages on social networking sites is "an element of the media agenda."
Yesterday, Facebook announced the deletion of 3 networks of Russian newspapers, claiming they violated the company's rules "to prevent outside interference in politics."
