The magistrate said she shared judicial philosophy with conservative Antonin Scalia, whom she called her mentor. "Judges are not legislators and must be determined to set aside any political point of view they may have," he said.

With a recognition to the figure of Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg and especially to her mentor, Conservative Judge Antonin Scalia, with whom she shared the same "judicial philosophy," Judge Amy Coney Barrett officially accepted the president's nomination this Saturday. , Donald Trump, to serve a lifetime office on the Supreme Court.

"Today I am honored to nominate one of the brightest and most talented legal minds in our nation to the Supreme Court. She is a woman of unparalleled achievement, imposing intellect, excellent credentials and unwavering loyalty to the Constitution," Trump said from the rose garden at the White House.

Barrett accepted the nomination in a ceremony where she was accompanied by her husband and seven children: "If the Senate does me the honor of confirming, I promise to fulfill the responsibilities of this job to the best of my ability."

Barrett had words of appreciation and praise for Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg, of whom he said that "her life of public service serves as an example to all of us."

If confirmed, she will fill the vacancy left by her death a week ago at age 87 from pancreatic cancer.

Barrett shared his closeness with Conservative Justice Antonin Scalia, a former Supreme Court Justice until his death in 2016, whom he considered his mentor and from whom he said he inherited his ideology.

"His judicial philosophy is mine as well: a judge must apply the law as it is written. Judges are not legislators and must be determined to set aside any political point of view they may have."

Trump's decision to nominate Barrett now depends on Senate confirmation.

The president urged Democrats to give the judge a "respectful and dignified hearing."

"I'm sure there will be no controversy," he said, probably wryly, recalling Brett Kavanaugh's complicated confirmation process in 2018.

The Senate would have less than 40 days before the election to confirm Trump's nominee, a quick schedule by recent standards, though not unprecedented.

The Republican Party has a sufficient majority to carry out the vote despite Democratic opposition.

If her nomination is confirmed, Barrett would be the fifth woman to serve on the Supreme Court and the youngest on the current court.

He would also be the third judge appointed by Trump, joining Neil Gorsuch and Kavanaugh.

This is Barrett's full speech on accepting the nomination:

Justice Amy Coney Barrett on accepting the Supreme Court nomination.

"Thank you very much Mr. President, I am deeply honored by the trust that you have placed in me, and very grateful to you and the first lady, the vice president and the second lady, and many others here for their kindness on this very occasion. overwhelming.

"I fully understand that this is a momentous decision for a president, and if the Senate does me the honor of confirming me, I pledge to fulfill the responsibilities of this job to the best of my ability. I love America and I love the Constitution.

"I am truly honored by the prospect of serving on the Supreme Court.

"If confirmed, I will be aware of who was before me. The American flag still flies at half mast in memory of Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg to mark the end of a great life.

"Judge Ginsburg began her career at a time when women were not welcome in the legal profession. But she not only broke glass rooftops, she smashed them. Because of this, she has earned the admiration of women to across the country and certainly around the world.

"She was a woman of enormous talent and consequence and her life of public service serves as an example to all of us.

"Particularly remarkable to me was his long and deep friendship with Judge Antonin Scalia, my own mentor. On Thursdays Scalia and Ginsburg had fierce disagreements with no bitterness between them. Their ability to maintain a warm and rich friendship despite their differences. It even inspired an opera. These two great Americans showed that arguing, even on matters of great importance, need not destroy affection. In my personal and professional relationships, I strive to live up to that standard.

“I was fortunate to be an assistant to Judge Scalia and given his incalculable influence in my life, I am very touched to have members of his family here today, including his loving wife, Maureen.

I worked for Judge Scalia more than 20 years ago, but the lessons I learned still resonate.

His judicial philosophy is mine too: a judge must apply the law as it is written.

Judges are not legislators and must be determined to set aside any political views they may have.

“The president has asked me to become the ninth judge, and it turns out that I am used to being in a group of nine, my family.

Our family includes myself, my husband Jesse, Emma, Vivian, Tess, John Peter, Liam, Juliete, and Benjamin.

Vivian and John Peter, as the president said, were born in Haiti and came to us five years apart, when they were very young.

The most telling facts about Benjamin, our youngest son, is that his brothers and sisters identify him as their favorite brother.

Our children make our life very complete.

And although I am a judge, I am best known at home as a room mother, vehicle driver and birthday party organizer.

“When schools got remote in the spring, I put another hat on: with Jesse we became co-directors of the Barrett online learning academy, and yes, the list of enrolled students was very long.

Our children are our greatest joy even though they deprive me of a reasonable amount of sleep.

“I couldn't handle this full life without the unwavering support of my husband Jesse.

At the beginning of our marriage, I envisioned that we would run the household as partners, and Jesse turns out to do a lot more work.

To my chagrin, I learned that my children consider him to be the best cook.

For 21 years, Jesse has asked me every morning what he can do for me that day.

And even though I almost always say 'nothing' to him, he still finds ways to get things off my plate.

And it's not because he has a lot of free time.

He works in law and is very busy.

It is because he is a wonderful and generous husband and I am very fortunate.

Jesse and I lead a life filled with relationships not only with our children, but also with siblings, friends, and babysitters.

“I am especially grateful to my parents, Mike and Linda Coney.

I spent most of my adulthood as a Midwestern man, but grew up in her home in New Orleans.

And as my brothers can attest, her generosity extends not just to us, but to more people than anyone could count.

They are an inspiration

“It is important at times like this to acknowledge family and friends, but I also want to acknowledge you, my dear Americans.

The president has nominated me to serve on the Supreme Court of Justice and that is an institution that belongs to all of us.

If confirmed, I will not assume that role for the benefit of my inner circle, and certainly not for my own good.

I would take on this role to serve you (Americans).

I would abide by the judicial oath that requires me to administer justice without regard to who the people are, to give equal rights to the rich and poor, and to faithfully and impartially fulfill my duties under the Constitution of the United States.

“I have no illusions that the road ahead will be easy, be it short or long term.

I never imagined that I would find myself in this position.

But now that I am, I assure you that I will meet the challenge with humility and courage.

“Members of the United States Senate, I look forward to working with you through the confirmation process, and I will do my best to show that I am worthy of your support.

Thank you".
