Cyclists can now ride on the sidewalk again.

Garching

- The Garching city council is

putting

everything back to the beginning on the B 471 old.

The aim of the most recent renovation, which cost 340,000 euros, was to lead cyclists and pedestrians on separate paths and to slow down car traffic.

Now cyclists and pedestrians are reunited.

It only took a few days after completion for the first outcry to be heard on social media.

From “Schildbürgerstreich” to bewilderment, you could read “how and who could plan something like that”.

An accident was not long in coming and even led to the B 471 old attracting the attention of television.

The cyclists now had to share the road space with the motorists in a strip marked by a marker.

The 1.5 meter wide safety distance they were entitled to was only guaranteed if the motorists drove behind the cyclists for a distance of around 700 meters.

Overtaking was not possible.

City council children: "We're afraid to drive here!"

Drivers have to learn that, said Mayor Dietmar Gruchmann earlier, who also pointed out that the slowdown in traffic was a premise of the conversion.

"If we reverse the current legally compliant regulation, we will reward drivers for their misconduct," said the town hall chief.

For him it is a matter of course to watch out for cyclists and not to overtake them.

The actual situation, however, teaches a different story.

Cyclists, including city councilors such as Salvatore Disanto (CSU), inspected the route.

He drove up and down the B 471 old for an hour.

The experience: “Of 70 cars, three lagged behind me.

It's a catastrophe. "Albert Biersack's (CSU) children told him:" We're scared to drive here! "

No “quick shot”: A well-thought-out concept is required

Garching's city councilors agreed at the meeting across all parties: "We have to readjust", said Daniela Rieth (Greens) -Peter Adolf (Greens) more than cynical.

In addition, even after the renovation, the council “always assumed that overtaking would work”, says Florian Baierl (UG).

The planner overdid it, and now nobody can drive.

The city council is drawing its conclusions: With immediate effect, cyclists are allowed to go back on the sidewalk, but they have to drive at walking pace.

If you want to move forward quickly, you can continue to drive on the road, where Tempo 30 remains.

The CSU and the Greens parliamentary groups had brought improvements with them, the CSU suggested the now planted green strip as a cycle path, the Greens recommended a conversion of the road so that motor vehicles and cycle traffic could be run in their own areas.

Both are associated with high costs and are neither quick nor easy to implement, since "the street drainage takes place in the green belt and we may then need a sewer system," says Gruchmann.

Instead of a "quick shot" as Joachim Krause (SPD) called it, a well thought-out concept should be developed.

Therefore, the city council wants to discuss further measures in detail.
