In the dispute over spying on digital communication channels to ward off terror and extremism, Union parliamentary group leader Ralph Brinkhaus (CDU) asked the SPD to give in.

The party should set aside its concerns about more powers of the security authorities.

"I am worried about the increased propensity to use violence in the area of political extremism," said Brinkhaus before a strategy meeting between Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) and cabinet members of her party on Sunday.

"To combat this development effectively, we need up-to-date powers for our security authorities."

In order to prevent terrorist or extremist crimes, the security authorities would also have to be able to access encrypted communication via messenger services such as WhatsApp or Skype, demanded Brinkhaus.

"I expect that we and our coalition partner will make progress on this important security project."

Telecommunications surveillance (TKÜ) is the crux of the slow reform of two security laws.

There are concerns on the part of the SPD.

Increase the pressure to persecute

At a retreat in early September, the head of the Union parliamentary group had demanded that the government quickly submit the planned draft law to strengthen the protection of the constitution.

The security authorities should be better placed in a position to recognize and locate digitally communicating extremists and perpetrators at an early stage.

In addition, the Federal Criminal Police Office must be reinforced in order to increase the pressure to persecute organized crime and drug-related crime in the fight against extremists.

Merkel wants to set the course for the substantive work of the coming months at a strategy meeting with the CDU ministers in her cabinet on Sunday afternoon.

According to information from the "German Press Agency", the Chancellor plans to set up a kind of timetable for the rest of the legislative period.

The cabinet members have therefore been asked to look for topics in their respective areas that the Union believes should be advanced.
