Fort Hood suspends troop training to regain "confidence" of soldiers after deaths

2020-09-26T17:20:37.991Z

After the brutal murder of the Latin soldier Vanessa Guillén, the family of another deceased soldier assures that his death was not an accident but that he "felt that something was going to happen."

Three weeks after taking office, the new commander of the Texas military base at Fort Hood, General John Richardson IV, ordered the suspension of training of all units as a first step to repair the "erosion of trust" between the soldiers and the leaders of the base, scene of the brutal murder of the Latin soldier Vanessa Guillén in April.

Earlier this month, another soldier died after fainting during physical training.

With him there are already 28 soldiers killed at the base so far this year.

The general has announced a year-long campaign to "heal the image" of the base and begin to rebuild its cohesion.

These measures will begin next week with Operation Phantom Action, a week-long training for leaders to begin to gain the trust of their soldiers.

They ask that the entire Army be investigated for cases of missing and dead soldiers

"First, you have to admit that there is a problem before you can begin to fix it. We have had an erosion of trust between the soldiers and their leaders," Richardson told the informational website Military.com.

"I am a true believer that cohesive teams are the ones that win the battles at the lowest level; it is the platoon that wins the wars," Richardson said.

"So if you talk to soldiers and they say, 'I don't trust my squad leader with important or sensitive information about my life,' then you don't have that level of cohesion that you want in a military team," he added.

Likewise, this week Operation Pegasus began, which aims to eradicate "harmful elements" from the Army.

"Suicide, sexual assault, sexual harassment and extremism have no place in the Army," according to a Fort Hood news release.

"This is all about building truly cohesive teams and giving the time and resources to really get to know each other," said Jeffery Broadwater, commander of the 1st Cavalry Division.

"The Fort Hood base is hellish," says Vanessa Guillén's mother, who continues to demand justice for her daughter

Each week a different battalion will participate in Operation Pegasus with fitness training competitions followed by an information session.

It also includes prevention of harassment and sexual assault, inclusion training, training on the value of life and a psychological exercise with certified specialists in mental health.

Latest deaths

The latest recorded death at the base is that of Corlton L. Chee, 25, who died after "collapsing" during physical training at the base on Aug. 28, according to Army officials.

Corlton Chee, a U.S. Army soldier, died at Fort Hood after collapsing during training in Killeen, Texas.

However, her cousin Carma Johnson, a spokeswoman for her family, said in a telephone interview with the Gallup Independent that Chee was being attacked and did not want to go to physical training that morning because "I felt like something was going to happen."

Johnson said Chee's body was found with bruises, scratches and a blow to the back of his head.

The family alleges that there was foul play, a circumstance denied by the base in a September 8 statement.

At the end of July, the body of 26-year-old Private Mejhor Morta was found in a reservoir managed by the Army Corps of Engineers after a group of fishermen alerted the Sheriff's Office.

A few days ago, the autopsy revealed that he died in an accident.

They are just a few of the 28 deaths that have occurred this year at Fort Hood.

These include five homicides, plus accidents, suicides, deaths from illness, cases still under investigation and one combat-related death.

Fort Hood has one of the highest murder, sexual harassment and stalking rates in the Army.

Earlier this month, Democratic Representatives Stephen Lynch of Massachusetts and Jackie Speier of California sent a letter to McCarthy requesting documents and information about the deaths as part of a Congressional investigation.
