About 200 worshipers are expected to arrive tonight (Saturday) for the main prayer of forgiveness, which is held at the Western Wall plaza in Jerusalem.

The event will be held under strict restrictions, due to the spread of the corona virus.

In a normal year the number of worshipers in this class reaches about one hundred thousand people, but this year following the guidelines of the Ministry of Health and the increase in the number of sick and dead, it was decided to hold the event in a limited format, in capsules, and under strict restrictions.

The Western Wall Heritage Foundation has placed ushers on their behalf, who will enforce the preservation of social distance and the wearing of masks during prayer.

Despite the guidelines, a long line of rabbis and public figures are expected to attend the event, including the Chief Rabbis of Israel, Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef and Rabbi David Lau, Rabbi of the Western Wall and Holy Places Shmuel Rabinovich, Interior Minister Aryeh Deri, Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Leon, Minister of Religions Yaakov Avitan.

The worshipers who will be allowed to participate in the traditional class are only residents of the Old City, who according to the closure guidelines have the option of attending prayers at the Western Wall plaza, which is up to a thousand meters from their area of residence.

Rabbi of the Western Wall and the Holy Places Shmuel Rabinovich said that "Towards the terrible days and in the shadow of the Western Wall, the remnant of our Temple, Jews from all sectors, from all factions and from all denominations unite to say Slichot. For an exciting and powerful prayer."

He added that "this year, the entire nation is longing for medicine, and longs for a solution. The people of Israel have always known how to unite and unite in times of crisis - and this year too we are all together, we will unite and ask for mercy, on ourselves and on the whole world."

The Western Wall Heritage Foundation invited the public "each man and his house to connect to the central selichot class live from their homes."

The prayer will be broadcast live on Walla!

Only residents of the Old City will be able to attend the prayer.

The Slichot prayer last year at the Western Wall

The prayer at the Western Wall marks 40 days of Slichot in the Sephardic custom, and about two weeks in the Ashkenazi custom, in one class that brings everyone together.

The prayer also ends the period of the "Ten Days of Repentance" - the days between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, which are considered particularly significant days.

According to Jewish tradition, on Rosh Hashanah a person's judgment was written and on Yom Kippur his judgment was signed.

As mentioned, only residents of the Old City are expected to attend the prayer tonight.

The next day is also the last 24 hours for the "atonement" custom, in which they take a male rooster for a man and a female hen for a woman, and wrap them around their heads and say "this is a suit, this is a return, this is an atonement."

In recent years, and especially this year in light of the spread of the corona, many have observed the custom of fish or money being donated to charity to avoid animal cruelty.
