At least 11 people were killed in a bar in the municipality of Jaral del Progreso, in the south of the state of Guanajuato, one of the most violent regions in Mexico

The events occurred around six in the morning this Sunday at the La Cabaña del Toro nightclub, which operated clandestinely near the state highway that connects with the municipality of Cortazar.

According to preliminary versions of the authorities, an armed group arrived at the scene and shot at workers and customers of the bar.

Seven men and four women died, and another was injured and taken to a nearby hospital.

According to local media, there are two missing.

For now, federal and state authorities have not made public their lines of investigation into the massacre.

In the southern part of the state, two groups have a dispute over the theft of hydrocarbons and the sale of drugs.

Jaral del Progreso, with a population of about 40,000 inhabitants, is located in southern Guanajuato and just 25 kilometers from Villagrán, the municipality where the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel was born.

This criminal group was led by José Antonio Yépez Ortiz, known as

, who was arrested on August 2 and is currently locked up in the federal maximum security prison of the Altiplano.

The Guanajuato cartel maintains a fierce dispute with the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel in this state of six million inhabitants, the most violent in Mexico since 2018.

Both criminal groups have among their sources of income fuel theft, drug trafficking, and extortion of merchants and businessmen.

According to local authorities, 9 out of 10 homicides that occur in Guanajuato are related to organized crime.

This year, from January to July, 2,695 people have been murdered in Guanajuato, a figure that represents 13% of the 20,494 fatalities reported throughout the country, according to federal government figures.
