Hausham has a new clergyman: Andreas Meier is now a permanent deacon.

He is deployed in Irschenberg.

Munich - As one of nine men, the Archbishop of Munich and Freising, Cardinal Reinhard Marx, ordained the householder Andreas Meier as a deacon on Saturday.

In a solemn ceremony in Munich's Liebfrauendom, the 35-year-old was lifted into his new spiritual office.

Meier lives in Hausham with his wife and a child.

The local believers were able to experience the new permanent deacon from their midst in a new role for the first time on Sunday.

In St. Anton he assisted at a mass and preached

Andreas Meier is a church service teacher and is employed as a part-time deacon in the Irschenberg parish association.

The position there has been vacant since 2018 after Horst Blüm moved to the professorship in Munich.

Parish association leader Tadeusz Kmiec-Forstner calls Meier a "stroke of luck", as he told our newspaper.

As a deacon, he will focus on kindergartens and children's villages as well as donating the sacraments - that is, he will work at weddings, baptisms and funerals.

"As a religion teacher at a church high school, he brings a lot with him," says the pastor.

He will start work on October 1st.

Deacon is the Greek word for servant.

Deacons are particularly dedicated to serving people.

With the nine consecrated persons, a total of 293 permanent deacons are active in the archdiocese.

127 of them are full-time, 53 part-time.

113 are retired.
