Overseas research predicts that the flu will hit the new crown virus or push up the infection rate, experts are not expected to break out at the same time

A study estimated by German and French scholars that has not been reviewed by peers at the same time may be infected with influenza or increase the transmission rate of the new crown pneumonia virus. Xu Shuchang, a government anti-epidemic expert and chair professor of the Department of Respiratory System at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, pointed out that six countries in the southern hemisphere, including Australia, Argentina, and Chile, which were in the flu season during the same period in the past, have recently recorded "zero flu". The reality is sufficient to overturn estimates. He believes that the social distancing measures continue to take effect, and the citizens continue to wear masks and take good personal hygiene. It is expected that flu and new pneumonia will not break out at the same time. However, it is recommended that high-risk groups be vaccinated successively from October.

It is expected that flu and new pneumonia will not break out at the same time. However, it is recommended that high-risk groups be vaccinated successively from October.

Experts expect that the risk of simultaneous outbreaks of influenza and new pneumonia is low, but it is recommended that high-risk individuals should be vaccinated against influenza as much as possible.

The Hong Kong Institute of Hospital Pharmacists today (27th) quoted a study from Germany and France to estimate that patients infected with influenza and new pneumonia at the same time can double the transmission rate of new coronary pneumonia. The study was uploaded to the preprinted journal website medRxiv.

Xu Shuchang: The actual situation may overturn the research calculation

Xu Shuchang, chair professor of the Department of Respiratory System of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, pointed out that the research has not been reviewed by peers, and the data is generally referred to after the research is evaluated.

He quoted recent flu data in the southern hemisphere showing that Australia, Argentina, Chile and other six countries have recently recorded "zero flu", which is far from the data of flu outbreaks in previous years.

The winter flu in Hong Kong at the beginning of this year was almost universally wearing masks. The duration of the flu season has been reduced from 10 to 17 weeks in previous years to only 5 weeks this year. Xu believes that this reflects the actual situation and overturns the relevant estimates.

If government and personal epidemic prevention measures continue

Xu Shuchang believes that the decline in influenza cases is related to the epidemic prevention measures. The rate of wearing masks in Western countries is generally lower than that in Hong Kong, but social distancing measures are still in effect, which will help reduce the infection rate.

If Hong Kong still maintains social distancing measures in the upcoming winter flu season, and most people wear masks and take good personal hygiene, Xu Shuchang estimates that the chance of flu and the new crown "pinching" is unlikely.

However, he suggested that high-risk groups such as the elderly and school children should be vaccinated successively from October as in previous years. Once someone in the community relaxes and causes an outbreak, it can still protect the high-risk groups to reduce the chance of infection.

Zhang Zhujun, director of the Department of Infectious Diseases of the Center for Health Protection of the Department of Health, said at the epidemic press conference that influenza and new coronavirus pneumonia are respiratory infectious diseases. Although there is currently no new crown vaccine available, Zhang suggested that the public should try to get flu shots. "At least It’s really easy to tell when you’re sick.” It can also reduce the complications of flu.
