SPIEGEL:
In autumn, children will need new shoes again.
Do they really have to be new or do used ones as well?
Esther Freifrau von Richthofen:
Of course, parents can put on their children used shoes, that's also in the interest of sustainability.
But the shoes shouldn't be used up.
SPIEGEL:
How can parents tell if used shoes are too used?
Von Richthofen:
Children should no longer wear second-hand shoes if they are baggy, if they have worn off on the heels, on the sides and on the soles.
Then they are no longer non-slip.
Shoes are also too used if they have cracks, if sweat marks can be seen inside the shoe or footprints on the insoles.
SPIEGEL:
Why are the shoes no longer good enough for children?
Von Richthofen:
Children don't have a secure hold in worn-out shoes, they can buckle in them, and the ligaments then suffer.
In addition, they no longer have a normal walking feeling in shoes that are too used.
This also applies to shoes that are too big, children literally swim in them, claw their toes and no longer roll properly.
This is bad for motor skills and the sense of balance, which is still developing in children.
